Doha October 2018

Back in October 2018 I finally had a chance to go dune bashing in the desert in Doha, Qatar. After visiting Doha for around 2 years, it was great to get round to doing it after so many recommendations from friends. We got picked up by our driver around 2/3 pm and we headed our way to the desert. On the way there, through the tinted windows of the Land Cruiser, the sky looked so colourful. I spotted some power lines come up, so while moving at about 90km/h I shot the first two shots below. Not bad for being in a moving car I thought. Before going in the dunes we stopped off where they let the air out the tyres. The place was kind of a waiting area camp with toilets, camel rides and a guy with a falcon. After watching a lady face plant previously in Australia from a camel, let’s just say I wasn’t that fussed on getting a short ride from one. I did, however, have a wonder and took a few snaps as they were laying down. The falcon was pretty cool, asking the man why they have a mask on, it’s so they don’t see some prey and fly off. The man was kind enough to have some photos taken of him with the bird.

It was about time we got back into the Land Cruiser. Heading out I didn’t really know what to expect. The further we got out the bigger the dunes got. Now some credit has to be given to these drivers, they have some unreal control when then are bombing down these dunes fast and drifting over edges. It was amazing. We stopped off at two points, on near a massive drop where I guess a dried-up lake was. This where we watched the sunset. And then by the coastline. Somewhere close to Saudi as my phone picked up a Saudi provider. It was already dark by this point. Using the light from the car’s headlights and brake lights we took so photos of the drivers. Driving back was a party, music full blast, flashing headlights and racing back to the air pump to pump the tyres back up. Safe to say it was a fun experience I never really thought would happen.

Thank you 2018!

2018 has been a big year for me. As this year draws to a close I look back to all that has happened, Travelled 4 months around Australia (promise I will get round to blogging it all), I released a new CD with my band Delayed Departure (If you haven’t checked it out we are on Spotify, shameless plug). I worked in many countries including Qatar, Malaysia, and across Europe (again I will blog it in the new year) I took more wedding bookings than ever before (Thankyou to all those couples!). Made a lot of new friends and experienced a lot of things I never thought I would have, like jumping out of a plane, swimming with sharks, and sand duning in the desert. I’ve been working my ass off this year and yes that has come at a cost at times of seeing friends and family. 2018 smashed 2017 out of the park and it’s only going up from here. Thank you to everyone that has commissioned me for work this year, without you I wouldn’t be able to live the life I lead. My new year’s resolution will defiantly be to blog more. 2019 is booking up so get in touch! See you in the new year! Eat loads, Drinks enough and stay safe :)

Travel: OZ Blog Ep: 1 - Week 1/2 - Bondi

So from Malaysia, I flew to Sydney airport. It was something surreal to be finally here in Australia. I have been saying to for a while and now I was there. First stop was meeting two of my best friends how moved out their 7 months prior. Was good to catch up with them and I was moving into the same hostel as them, Noah’s Backpackers Bondi. Situated on Bondi Beach. What can I say really its a hostel, was strange at first living in a room with loads of strangers but you get to know the people if you or they stay around long enough. Top selling points of this place being the rooftop area, the location and the atmosphere of the place. Anyways let’s get talking pictures.

The first place I took my camera to was Watson’s Bay. Wasn’t originally going there to take photo’s more to check out a cliff diving spot. At this point, I was an absolute wimp of heights, looked over the edge at the 40/50-foot drop looking at a big old rock in the sea and there was no chance. So while two friends took a leap of faith into the water I shot a few snaps of the Sydney skyline in the distance and the nearby beach Camp Cove. Honestly one of the best beaches near that area for swimming.

Few days had passed, I was getting into the real backpacker life of beaching it all-day and partying all night and making friends. The next shot is of the front of the Hostel, kind of a photo spot for most people, always walking out to see someone taking a selfie next to the graffiti. So today I was going to do the famous Bondi to Coogee coastal walk, or Coogee to Bondi, whatever ever way to start it really. Obviously starting at Bondi, making our way from the south side of the beach past Iceberg seawater pool. This walk is honestly top of my must-do in the Bondi area, so much I did it like 3 times across my stay in Australia. The blue water, the sound of the ocean, cliché but its honestly just being at peace, seeing people drawing, writing, and sitting along the cliffs looking out to the ocean. At one stage of the walk, I kept hearing a strange noise, to look over the edge to find a fisherman on the rock edge casting out. As you can see in the photos I did one of the photos most travellers do, sit on a ledge and pose. The cliff is called Shark Point, now as stated before I hate heights, and I remember getting on the ledge and looking over to Mark taking a photo and then freezing, having to shuffle and lift yourself over a rock backwards is not for a person who hates heights, but I did it. One of my first in many victories with heights on this trip. One of my favourite shots of this was a sticker Mark found on a rail closer to the Coogee end of the walk, Sorry there were just so many beaches to remember what exact one. the sticker read ‘Live a great story’ mark asked me how I would frame the shot, so instead of showing him I snapped it to show him. Now I missed quite a bit about the walkout. The random diversion through a big cemetery due to cliff erosion, the many beaches walked past, and the end at Coogee where I first experienced Macdonald’s in Australia. Gravy fries are the nuts!

The next sets of photos in this gallery are of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. I was getting the ferry to Manly with some friends as a last-minute trip before I was going to a gig that evening. As you can see the first few are shot from the ferry, I forgot how windy ferries were. Once on Manly, I chilled at the beach for a bit. Explored the town briefly and then had to leave my friends to head back to get to the gig in time. For anyone who likes rock music Northlane are a must. I’m trying to keep these blogs mostly about the photos rather than the random other stuff I did. Comment below if you want to know more than just the photos.

Lastly in my final few days around Bondi, I headed back to Watson bay. On the map, we spotted a beach we hadn’t been to in the area so my hostel room decided to check it out. Big up room 106! Walking past Camp Cove, past the cliff jump spot (Yes I still didn’t do it) and along the path, I wondered ahead to check out the end of the path, just to see the view from the edge of the bay. Walking back I snapped the last shot of one of my roommates walking back to meet the others at the beach. Now, this is where it gets funny. So the beach was called Lady Bay, quickly I realised the group messed up. It was a nudist beach. I don’t think I put my camera away so fast in my life. Don’t want to be accused of taking pictures. This beach was pretty untouched and quiet. Some of the most memorable moments while being there was Scarlett leaving her to go pro door open and diving under, R.I.P Scar’s GoPro and also being approached by a middle naked man, telling the worst dad jokes ever while the rest of the group one by one swim away leaving just me and him talking. Awkward….

I generally didn’t have my camera with me a lot of the time while living in Bondi for the two weeks, more adjusting to the new life, making friends and partying like any other backpacker. Long story short, our plans changed quite quickly ended up booking/planning our amazing trip randomly one day and left a few days after. Shout out to Monni Travels! Monni is one of the loveliest travel agents you will meet, so much experience and knowledge of what to do and she beats all prices. So if you’re planning on trips check her out.

A few spots to check out:

  • Bar 34 - Live music downstairs and generally has a great Backpacker vibe

  • Hong Ha - Amazing Vitenemse rolls, great for hangovers. I miss the Chicken and lemongrass roll

  • Frankie’s Pizza - If you love rock music like I do what else is better than an old school rock bar/club that sells pizza in the first room. Get an apple delicious at the bar

  • Bondi Beach - Have a go at body surfing and getting wiped out

Next Stop Surf Camp.

Travel: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

So it’s been a while since I’ve done a blog post. This year has honestly been mental, which you will find out in the coming posts. Luckily it being December I have a little downtime to get round to writing these.

So let’s go! Flashback to March 2018. I was away in Kuala Lumpur. While there I managed to get a little time to go explore the more touristy parts. So the first few images are at the Batu Caves. Anyone going there now wouldn’t see the same thing as they just revamped it with the new rainbow stairs and I’m sure they have finished the construction now that I saw with the temples inside. What can I say really, I was jet-lagged, it was so humid, and what else would I choose to do other than walk up a staircase of hundreds of steps. Great idea Charlie. Anyways back to me not moaning. One of the main reasons for me going there was I wanted to just take some nice portraits of the monkeys. It’s quite funny watching the monkeys open peoples backpacks and stealing their water and food. One man was walking up the steps feeding them Pringles, highly nutritious! And apparently he does it every day. Was quite nice to shoot for just the fun of it.

The second set of photos you see are from the city. Went out with a few friends to go grab a drink after a long day and to go see the famous Petronius Towers. Not going to lie they were pretty cool. Better to see from a distance unless you want neck ache. Luckily my friend knew of a sky bar, which had open windows to look out across to the towers. That’s where the last image is shot. Having to ask a group of drunken men if it was okay to take a picture from the VIP table was a laugh. From here I then got on a plane to Australia to start my amazing 4-month adventure, which I miss massively. Enjoy the images below!

Event: James Bluck @ Fuzzy Bear Windsor December 2017

In the arches in Windsor lies a comedy club by evening and nightclub by night. The Fuzzy Bear is a qwerky underground venue, and on this occasion, I was there to shoot James Bluck for some current live shots. the venue is long and narrow, colourful lighting and surprisingly a great space to shoot in. Here are the shots below, let me know what you think?

Travel: Doha, Qatar

So as a part of a company I freelance for I get to travel the world. And on this occasion I was sent to Doha in Qatar. It was my first time being in the middle east, and what a experience it was. Going to a place that I would describe as a desert of fridges. Outside very hot and inside very cold. Im not gonna lie when I went out there I did miss certain foods, but you have got to experience the culture and there food too.

I visited a few places while in West Bay, my favourite being the museum of Islamic Art, probably the only place I found the building more interesting than the contents. You get an amazing view of West Bay too (as seen below). If you follow the walk way around the waterfront you come to a great little cafe with comfy loungers.

Another place I briefly visited was the Soouk. Traditional buildings, full of culture, and great food. A cool little place to wonder around for a new person in Qatar. I didn't explore too much on this time round but I'm back out there in January 2018 so expect some more shots then, Enjoy the shots below from this trip.

Travel: Devon, UK

Back in the start of October a friend and I travelled down to Devon. Now, this trip wasn't supposed to be about photography. The main reason for this trip was that I had booked getting my whole right are tattooed. And then while we were in Devon, we would spend the day after exploring.

The duration was the trip was 2 nights. Day one after finishing work we drove down to Salcombe to stay in our hotel. The hotel was unreal, a big manor house with loads of space, lovely kitchen, even and had a well with a glass floor over it, Little creepy. Day two we were up bright an early and went into Kingsbridge. Spent 8 hours getting tattooed all in one sitting. Safely say I was sore. Keeping this part short, as it has nothing to do with photography.

Anyways Day 3, the part that is actually about photography. Woke up nice and early. My whole right arm had swollen double in size,  Still wasn't going to let it stop me. Our first stop was Burgh Island. At this point, the weather was miserable, drizzly and wet. The whole time I was there I could only think of the Ben Howard track. Good track you should look it up. After wondering around the beach, we started to make our way past the island hotel and around the back to the mermaid bay (think its called something like that?) It's a lovely little spot with a wooden platform in the middle of the bay. We ended up sitting there for a bit, taking in the sun now that the weather had changed, That's the UK weather for you.

We then moved onto Soar Mill. Lovely wide beach with over hanging cliff and we even found a cave. The cave was pitch black and our phone torches weren’t doing anything to how deep this cave went. We spent a little time wandering about the beach. Dodging the streams of water as I didn’t exactly were the most suitable footwear, breathable sport trainers. Walking along the ridge gave us some lovely viewpoints across the shore.

Our final stop before heading home was Startpoint Lighthouse. We decided to wander right from the lighthouse to find a pretty untouched beach. With some strange rock formations on the shore, which we decided to climb and walk across to then sit and chill as the sun began to drop. We then followed the ridge along towards the lighthouse around the back, great views but beware the cliffs are crumbling. All in all it was a successful trip with a very swollen arm.

Hope you enjoy the read and check out some of the photos below.

On tour With: Invisions

So while out on the road in July with Faultlines I ended up shooting the headliners Invisions. This is a collection of those shots and a quick little video made for them. On the tour they were promoting for the release of there latest album 'Never Nothing', each night they had the crowd moving and causing havoc with there beefy guitar chugs and powerful vocal lines. They are out on tour at the moment, check them out if they are in a city near you. Enjoy the shots.

On tour with FAULTLINES Part 4

Day Four: Derby, Sitwell Tavern

The fourth and final day of the tour, sad times. And how else to end an awesome tour, but a good old-fashioned floor show in a pub-like venue on a Sunday of course. The boys smashed it, and I even got up to do some cheeky guest vocals (yes I can hold a tune and scream). The great thing about this gig was it was cramped close and intimate for the people there. The best way to be in a small venue. Overall the tour was great, first time going on the road with a band as a photographer and deffo could do it more often. the Faultlines boys were awesome and if you get a chance to go watch them I would deffo recommend. Check out the pictures below and the snippet. Hope you have enjoyed the tour photos, and if you have any enquiries regarding gig or tours drop me a line on my contact page.

On tour with FAULTLINES Part 3

Day Three: Leeds, Temple of Boom

After the Hull show smashing it out the park, we all knew that the Leeds date was gonna be even better. Faultlines home town, so we knew it was gonna be packed, and exactly that happened. Originally was supposed to be in the smaller room, but due to ticket sales got upgraded to the main room. The boys played unreal, by this point I knew every part of their set word for word, and shameless to say if you looked over at me I was probably singing to myself. Limited angles for shots, it is a closed stage except for the front, and one point in the set I was crouched behind the guitar amp and drums, wouldn't recommend it. Lots of smoke and front of house lighting made crowd visibility in the photos very low. As always the Faultlines lighting rig brought the atmosphere, great crowd response and an all round solid show., Packed out venue, loads of great people. Went onto Key Club for the after party, which left us a bit worse for wear Sunday morning. Next stop Derby.

On tour with FAULTLINES Part 2

Day Two: Hull, O'riley's

After the first date on this run went off with a bang, the guys were buzzing to keep the good energy going. Sadly Lee had to be elsewhere for day 2 and 3, Hence the lack of Lee in the photos. O'rileys is a fair size venue. A much larger stage that Subside the night before. I shot a load-in video to push out the day of the show (see below). Then on to usual things of set up merch and try and find some food. KFC was today's grub.

Behind a false wall near the back was a boxing gym area with a full-size ring. This had to be taken advantage of for a few shots and clips. I took Faultlines and Invisions back there before they played, as the guys wanted a few funny photos of Ben and Ryan gloving up.

The show itself was insane. Good stage size with loads of space for great angles and shots. Great crowd response and didn't get wiped out by a mosher (go Charlie!! ) Also the stage lighting was great for photos. Probably got some of my favourite shots of this run at this venue. Both Faultlines and Invisions tore it up. All in all a great second night.

After load out, we drove back to Leeds stopping off at a Mcdonalds at a services somewhere. By this point, we all had a few to drink (Except for Sie as he's driving). We loaded ourselves we like two meals worth each. All made out way back to the van when Chris wasn't feeling the best. I have never seen sick stack the way it did, Chris felt fine and dandy after haha, Lad. Benji crawled back into his bunk and I passed out in my seat waiting to arrive back at Chris's. All in all the tour was sick so far, Like my pun ;)

Check the videos and photos below, Look forward to Part 3 in Leeds.

On tour with FAULTLINES Part 1

So anyone who knows me knows that my other passion from photography is music. I'm in a band called Delayed Departure (Plug Plug Plug!) And I'm always looking for ways of merging my two passions together. And this was a perfect way. Since photographing gig's, I have always wanted to go on tour with a band as a photographer.

I got a message from my good friend Chris from FAULTLINES asking me to hit the road with the boys across Birmingham, Hull, Leeds and Derby. Of course, I was gonna say yes. The tour as a whole was awesome and was what I needed. Love being put on the spot and every venue was different in size and lighting. So this is the first in a series of blogs about the tour.

Day One: Birmingham Subside

I was pretty pumped for the first show of the run. We arrived, loaded in and started setting up. I somehow got roped into helping with merch, because I'm a nice guy obvs. The venue was a long L shaped room, stage one end and then follow down the bar to wrap around to a pool table area. The stage was a few feet off the floor and a medium sized space for the size of the venue. Luckily for me, FAULTLINES have their own lighting rig. And that's one thing I will say if a band has their own lighting rig, synced to their backing track. It makes a massive difference to the atmosphere of the gig and the pictures. Blinders are my favourite for action shots.

With limited space, the boys still put on an energetic show. jumping around the stage, hopping in the crowd and kicking off the tour with a bang. It was very tight to get as many different angles for drummer shots but that's down to space. Whenever Ryan jumped into the crowd I'd move quickly to shoot a few of Sie.

As well as Photos, I was shooting clips of video throughout the set to do a montage of the night each day while out on the road. See the video of the night below with the photos under as well. All in all a big start to the run of shows. Next stop Hull.

Event: Dj Chubby Chub and Moses Midas @ Shaka Zulu Camden

Back in May I was hired for a event with my good friend DJ Moses Midas. I work with Moses a fair bit throughout the year and I always enjoy the catch up, but this event was something a little different. For this event we went to pick up DJ Chubby Chub from Heathrow Airport. Now for those of you who don’t know, DJ Chubby Chub is 50 Cent's touring DJ. Was pretty mad to be working with him. Chub was over from the states as he was set to play Mutiny Festival the day after with 50 Cent.

Back to the story. The day followed by arriving to the event in Camden London. The venue was called Shaka Zulu. Restaurant by day nightclub by night. The decor was amazing; mostly everything was a woodcarving. There staircase was a escalator turned off, two floors of bars underground. They have a out of the ordinary menu also. We sat down for some food before the night begun. Not your typical chicken and rice menu, more like crocodile cigars and zebra. It was crazy! Chub was such a down to earth guy, talking about stories over food was an experience. I had a laugh all night with the guys, being apart of someone’s entourage in something I slowly getting used to. The venue itself was very dark, so I was using on camera flash to bounce off the ceiling most the night. Anyways enough words, Take a look at the pictures below :)

Event: Silvastone/Moses Midas @ 02 Islington London 14/04/17

Back in April I was hired to shoot Silvastones event at the 02 Islington in London. Working with DJ Moses Midas and also through the clothing brand Comme Moi. The event was a big line up of acts across the Afrobeats/RnB community, with the headline spot of renowned African artist/producer Silvastone.

The event itself was something I have never experienced before. A big difference from the rock gigs I'm used to, but none the less an amazing night and a breathe of fresh air. I would be lying if I weren’t having a little boogie at times. I have never been in such a crowed pit before, now the 02 Islington isn’t exactly small, but also it’s not exactly your Brixton 02 either. There were about twelve people in that pit at all times shooting. Limiting space and angles. Before the start I shot onstage for a few minutes with my 17-35mm of Moses Midas, using a little bit of flash to light the dark area to the side of stage. The rest of the night was shot on my Sigma ART 35mm , to bring out the colours in the lighting and Nikon 85mm for tighter crops. Enjoy the shots below.

Travel: Sieberg/Cologne, Germany

I went away back in Febuary to Germany with some friends for the carnival celebrations. It was the first proper time I got to test out my new toy. The Fuji X100T.  Now my shots mainly consist of wandering around taking random portraits of my friends, us going places or of things like the padlock bridge in Cologne. Only took my camera out a few days due to it being a drinking holiday, not a photography one. I was really happy with how the X100T handled and performed as a all round travel camera , see below for examples.

Filter Studio Shoot with James

So usually when I have an idea about experimenting or doing something a little different, and my problem is a subject half the time. And as usual my brother wanted new press shots. So to kill two birds with one stone, I shot him with these new ideas in mind.

Now I’m not a big fan of high key lighting in most cases. I think it looks to plain, and I generally prefer a grey looking background to a white one. The tones are more complimenting in my eyes. The first few shots below are shot with one light from the left side above the subject point 45 degrees.

Now for what I actually wanted to experiment with, Colour Filters. Through the shoot I kept switching the different colour filters around, layering filters and just winging it. Shot with just two studio lights, with a reflector dish on each and taped the filters over the dish. My favourite combination was to use a purple filter on the right and red and blue half over lapping on the left. Due to the position of the lights, the background was split into the two colours and the face but opposite colours, which was interesting. Why spend time in post making colours when you can just as easily do it in camera.

Like what you see and want some shots, or have any questions. Drop me a message in the contact page.

'Few days in Snowdonia' Part 3

Slight Typo on Snapchat.... smooth

Slight Typo on Snapchat.... smooth

Welcome to the third and final blog post in the 'Few days in Snowdonia' series. If you haven't read part one or two, please find them through the links below

http://www.charliebluck.co.uk/bloglist/2017/2/20/few-days-in-snowdonia

https://www.charliebluck.co.uk/bloglist/2017/2/21/few-days-in-snowdonia-part-2

So today would be the big day where two guys from Farnborough would wonder there way to the top of Snowdon and celebrate with a beer at the top. Started with a big breakfast to then walk 15 minutes to the start of the path. Baring in mind we attempted to go to the top without an idea of a route a few days before. Now that we had a general idea of a route, it was hopefully going to end up better. Believe it or not one of the hardest parts is the bottom, the steep tarmac road to the entrance gate to the Llanberis path. Focused on beating our terrible attempt to only getting a third of the way up due to fog a few days before, we were powering up.

The first time we stopped was at the halfway house, managed to do it in an hour and 15 minutes. Sadly due to being out of season, the halfway house was closed, same with all the train stations. At this point we only saw about 2 people on our travels. As you can see from the photo on your left, the fog was already quite low. Oh well, if its too foggy for pictures, at least I could say I climbed Snowdon.

Following the path, the incline became steeper as what I can only describe as a massive stairway up. Shame it wasn’t a escalator. Near the top you reach a bridge that you walk under near the second to last train station, peering over the edge I saw a vertical drop was an uneasy view. Now we spotted two people walking along the train tracks, which was less steep, however we continued on the path as the tracks were covered in snow. We then stopped for a little rest. At this point we were nearly at the summit. Just looking around, having an apple, chilling for a while to take in how far we have walked. The answer to that is very far. Walked up near the edge, to a see another steep drop for what must have been about 30 times a standard 2-storey house back home. Major nope factor. So with being refuelled by a good old Granny Smith apple, we continued.

Now we thought we reached the top when we saw the Copa Summit rock. at this point Visibility was literally a few meters in front of you. The wind was battering us and then out of nowhere a woman walks by. I asked have we reached the top, she said walk further into the fog for 10 minutes and you reach the table at the top. She lied, it was 30 minutes. By this point we were fairly tired, but the end was near. We must have timed it pretty well, because as we came closer from all different directions other people were coming to get to the top. There are a fair few different paths to take, but we stuck with Llanberis path as we stayed in Llanberis. So I realised at this point I wasn’t going to be getting a amazing landscape view from the top, but it was an experience non the less.

At the top, once a group moved from the table me a Steve had a well-deserved can each, as seen on the left. Honestly the best can of Dark fruit I have ever had, Super ice cold and my body was craving the sugar. We then took shelter from the wind on the back wall of the Train station at the top. Raiding my bag to find fun sized milky ways was happy sight.

Weather conditions weren’t getting any better up the top so we made our move back, this time taking the track path through the snow. One minute you would be walking on the snow thinking its only a few inches next minute you up to your knees in it. Being the big kids we are, we decided it would be a laugh to do a snow angel. Something to say we have done. Snow angel on top of Snowdon is off the bucket list. Powering down the mountain taking no breaks we managed to get down in just over an hour. There were times where it was more like us stumbling nearly falling down rather than walking down.

Once back at the hotel we celebrated with a shower and a beer, we needed it.

Other than that we just walked around town got food and chilled for the rest of the day, so nothing interesting to talk about. The Drive home was as comical as the drive there, blasting old pop punk songs making us feel like we are back in school. But it was a happy sight to see my bed. Thank you for reading this series of blog posts, drop me a message if you like these and would like this more personal take of my trips. More trips are in the planning stages so be sure to keep an eye out for more posts. Enjoy the pictures below.
